Investigation Date: 25th January 2008
Investigators present: Drew Bartley, Fiona Vipond, Lee Stephenson, Noel Sorbie and Ralph Keeton and guests Darren, Trudie and Steven.
The Castle Eden Inn is a very atmospheric, historic building set in the village of Castle Eden in County Durham. We were invited to investigate this property after the property was taken over by new publicans who were experiencing some phenomena around the building.
The team went along with an open mind as, as far as we were aware, the property had never been investigated in the past.
The team and guests were divided into three groups as follows
Team 1
Peter (Psychic), Lee (Investigator) and Darren (Bar owner)
Team 2
Noel (Psychic), Trudie (Bar owner), Karen (Guest) and Fiona (Investigator)
Team 3
Ralph (Psychic), Steven (Guest) and Drew (Investigator)
The property had a number of areas to investigate, especially on the first floor where there were a number of rooms along two corridors. Because of this, we decided to investigate a whole corridor in one vigil. We named each corridor the “gym” corridor and the “back” corridor. The areas we split the property into the following areas
Cellar, Lounge/Bar, Restaurant/function room, Back corridor and Gym corridor.
Because the bar took a long time to vacate, the first vigil didn’t begin until 01:25am and finished at 02:00am.
01:25am - 02:00am
Team 1 Cellar : 12 degrees Celsius : EMF Nil.
During this vigil there was no paranormal activity witnessed with night vision camera, digital camera, EMF meter, temperature monitor or Dictaphone. Peter picked up on the name ‘Jock’ and also ‘Baron’. Whether this is a name or a title he wasn’t sure. Peter also sensed the smell of dog faeces and the presence of vicious dogs. Unfortunately, none of these suggestions could be confirmed by Darren.
Team 2 Lounge/Bar : 19 degree Celsius
There was no paranormal activity experienced during the vigil. Towards the end of the vigil there was a light anomaly seen on night vision camcorder that may have been dust or an insect. The function room was investigated during this vigil also. The temperature here was 10 degrees Celsius. The names Jo and Dave and the date 1824 was picked up by Noel. These names and date could not be confirmed.
Team 3 Back corridor
Once again there was no paranormal activity experienced during this vigil though all three members of the group felt very uneasy throughout the vigil.
02:10am – 03:15am
Séance in a room upstairs
Drew monitored the séance whilst all other people present took part. No activity occurred during the séance.
03:30am – 04:00am Vigil 2
Team 1 : Bar/lounge
Team 2 : Cellar
Team 3 : Corridors upstairs
No-one experienced any paranormal activity during this vigil therefore there is nothing to report.
At 04:00 the group met in the lounge area and set up a Ouija board. Nothing conclusive came out of the Ouija. The glass moved around the board but did not give any useful information.
Summary
The investigation at The Castle Eden Inn was very quiet and provided no conclusive evidence that the building was active. This does not imply that the building is not active, it purely suggests that on this particular night there was no concrete evidence to say that it is. Another investigation may give totally different results.
