Investigation Date: 16th March 2007

Investigators present: Drew Bartley, Fiona Vipond and Lee Stephenson, Nikki Austwicke and Ralph Keeton and property owners, Darren and Trudy

The McOrville inn, dates back a few hundred years and stands by the green in Elwick village. The inn has a history of hauntings and we were privileged to undertake an investigation here.

Layout

There were three areas to investigate

  1. The bar
  2. The cellar
  3. The flat above the bar

A crucifix trigger object was positioned in each of the three areas but did not show any movement over the duration of the investigation.

Vigil 1 Start time 01:55

Drew                              Solo in the cellar

Ralph, Nikki and Trudy        Main bar

Fiona, Lee and Darren         Flat

For the first vigil, Drew made his way into the cellar alone and left the others in the areas above. The cellar, as you would imagine, was cold and what made it worse was that an ice cooler was blowing cold air into the atmosphere. The vigil began with Drew calling out to whoever or whatever may be listening. Initially, there was no response; no noise, no light anomalies, nothing. Quite soon, Drew began to feel he was not alone. At 02:05, a loud clatter was heard as if a stone had been hurled at the barrels in the cellar. There are many pipes in the cellar that make tapping sounds from time to time, but this sound was markedly louder and seemed to have a purpose. With Drew’s senses heightened he continued to call out. At 02:10 and 02:15 the same type of sound was heard and shortly after this Drew filmed a spiral light anomaly move vertically from the floor to the ceiling and disappear. Coinciding with this was a temperature drop from 15 degrees Celsius to 11 degrees Celsius over approximately 5 seconds. After this the vigil ended and Drew returned to the bar to join Ralph, Nikki and Trudy. Their vigil was quite uneventful but after discussing Drew’s experience in the cellar, Ralph commented that at the time Drew had seen the spiral light anomaly in the cellar, Ralph had seen one appear through the floor of the bar (directly above the cellar and where Drew had seen the anomaly disappear). Fiona, Lee and Darren’s vigil in the flat unfortunately did not bring many paranormal happenings. Fiona called out to see if any spirit beings would respond in any way but to no avail. There were a couple of possible orbs caught on night vision cameras but nothing conclusive. Also, Fiona’s batteries in her torch drained of energy even though they were new.

Vigil 2 Start time 02:40

Fiona                                               Solo in the cellar

Lee and Darren                                  Main bar

Fiona was hopeful to witness some activity in the cellar after the experiences Drew had experienced down there. She stood in the cellar and tried to make contact with the possible entity that had been there previously with Drew. No events were recorded during Fiona’s vigil. Could this be that whatever was down there (if anything) had left the atmosphere or had more affinity with males? The next vigil in the cellar would have to be a male. Upstairs in the flat on the other hand was proving to be quite eventful. Whilst doing a sweep of the room with Drew’s Gauss meter, he started to pick up some electromagnetic energy in the middle of the room. The audible sound coming from his Gauss meter was a click that occurred with great consistency. Almost like listening to a Newton’s cradle. Near the door of the flat, Ralph picked up on a young girl of around 12 years of age that lived in the 1870’s. Ralph asked the girl to move closer and in response to this the Gauss meter gave off an increased frequency of audible ‘clicks’. This occurred whilst Drew held the meter still and at arms length. Whilst standing still and measuring electromagnetic energy and listening to the ‘clicks’ generating from it, the sound stopped dead. After a few seconds silence the meter started to pick up electromagnetic energy again, still with Drew holding the meter in the same position. The presence of electromagnetic energy in the middle of a room away from electrical equipment is strange but to then witness the energy come an go is very unusual. Lee and Darren’s vigil in the bar was very quiet and no paranormal occurrences were noted.

Vigil 3 Start time 03:45

Lee                                                   Solo in the cellar

Drew, Ralph, Nikki, Darren and Trudy     Main Bar

Fiona                                                Solo in the flat

Lee made his way down to the cellar to see whether his presence could provoke any paranormal occurrences. He called out to the atmosphere to see if any entity would respond. Unfortunately, there was no response to Lee and after 25 minutes he was contacted by Drew via walkie-talkie to see if Lee was experiencing anything paranormal. With Lee’s response being negative, it was decided to terminate the vigil since nothing was happening in any of the other vigils. The team then came together to perform a Ouija in the main bar.

Ouija

Ralph did a solo in the cellar whilst the Ouija was ongoing and Drew monitored any activity from the Ouija with a camcorder. All other persons present gathered in a circle and lightly placed a finger on an upturned glass. It took a few questions and prompts for the glass to start moving, slowly at first and then with more vigour. After some interrogation of the spirit, it was apparent that the spirit was a relative of Fiona’s. It was actually her grandad ! He answered questions posed by Fiona that only she could know and her grandad responded with mostly correct answers. Some of the responses were cryptic and some were gobbledygook like this response to a question – “I-Y-I-Y-I-Y-I-Y” and “L-A-L-A-L-A-L-A”. All in all, the Ouija was extremely interesting but a Ouija should not be undertaken without advice and protection from someone who knows what they are doing.

The team would like to thank Darren and Trudy for allowing us into their bar and flat to perform this investigation.
